Dubai. It’s a weird old place. Or rather a weird new place. You could be excused for thinking someone just turned up the day before yesterday with a big bag of money and a job lot of concrete and gold trim and just stuck it all together. Which is kind of what did happen. It’s harder to see behind the façade than most cities – to get under it’s skin and get ‘local’. Very little here has the feel of being established or part of an ongoing culture, but for all the brash, bold Las-Vegas-of-the-Middle-East-ness of the metropolis, as soon as you get outside the city limits and away from the futuristic high rises, the United Arab Emirates is a very different place – seductively foreign to us and full of surprises.
